Zombies: When Will I Stop Writing About Them?

Wait, you want more than that?

I never wanted to be a zombie author. I wanted to be a horror author who dabbled in writing about zombies, and thrillers and contemporary fiction, erotica, humor… you name it.

But somewhere along the line I got a lot of sales on the Dying Days series, and readers who asked a lot of questions and bought a lot of books, and I kept writing and writing.

Besides Highway To Hell, which kicked off my zombie writing and which a sequel is being worked on as we speak, there are also a few other longer works in the Dying Days series:

Obviously there is Dying Days, which is the main story following Darlene Bobich and her group of survivors. This is the focus for me each year, and my goal is to release at least one new book every 12 months. My real goal is 2 a year, but that hasn’t happened yet. Maybe someday…

There is also Still Dying, which are short stories either using some characters readers know or brand new one-off stories that didn’t quite fit with the main storyline. The second release in the series had short stories from other notable writers set in the Dying Days world. That was interesting and fun. Still Dying 3 will be released in 2015 with short stories written by me and set further into the timeline (think Dying Days 4 and beyond). I’ve already written a couple of the shorts for it.

The fourth set of Dying Days books is Dying Days: Origins. The first book gave the prequel tale to Tosha Shorb, the fiery redhead from Dying Days 2. The second book (which is out this week) stars David Monsour, who was also in Dying Days 2. It tells his back-story leading up to Dying Days 2.

So, back to the question… when will I stop writing about zombies?

Heck, at this rate… never. I have so many fresh ideas for all four of these series. The zombies are developing and the plots are moving in ways the readers don’t expect, and they still care about the characters. I still care about the characters.

It will end when the characters stop telling me their story. I know it sounds completely cliché and I don’t care. It’s the truth. No matter how minor the character is, I want to write and read more about them. I want to learn where they came from and where they are going. The ultimate goal would be to write every single highlight of every character down until there is nothing left to say about them. Will I ever get there? Who knows… but until then, I’ll keep writing Dying Days zombie tales…
