After I was raped, I found the most therapeutic way to handle the trauma was to write it all down, to spill it into a fictional life, so that it became both part of me and a separate, tangible thing that I could use to suck out all the pain I was carrying around. In the midst of that self-therapy, I discovered a love for writing stories after having spent years wondering what was missing from my life, since I had no real career goals, no real passions, no real desires to do anything with my life. So, the worst thing that ever happened to me turned into the best thing, because I can't imagine my life without my stories or my characters. I love building fantasy worlds to take both myself and my readers out of the real world for a little while, and I love telling stories that will hopefully move people and also open their eyes to other ways of thinking at the same time. There's so much excitement to the writing process, from that first hint of a new idea, all the way through to that validating moment when the paperback proof copy is in my hands – something real and tangible that started in my head and my heart and is now embodied in a physical format. The beauty of being self-published is that I have complete control – my words, my way, on my schedule – but also all the responsibility, and I'll openly admit that I completely fail at the marketing aspect of things. However, even though I'd love for writing to one day be a full-time career, money really isn't the point. It's all about sharing my stories, and putting my beloved characters into readers' hands, and those little moments of getting feedback, when readers tell me how much they enjoyed my books, that make it all worth it.   Much of my horror work is set in Victorian times, a period of great interest to me. I love working on stories from that time because the research is an absolute pleasure. A time when street lighting was so poor you could scarcely see your own hands let alone those of the murderer reaching out for you... A time when leaps in science abraded the religious sensibilities of the Establishment... A time when engineers forged the future in stone, steel and steam. I have a particular fondness for the tea trade of the old British Empire, a love of pharmacy, phrenology and quackery. When you throw all of this into the mix - no, that's wrong, this was all already there in the mix - when you learn enough about that mix, you find the perfect backdrop for a horror tale. Where better to hide a monster than the bosom of propriety, the Middle-class terraced home? What better venue in which to consider your wrongs than the bustling gin palace? Sam has been kind enough to allow me a little space on her blog to promote my new book, MOLLY LEE. The story is a female-driven account of a young naive girl’s journey into an independent, strong woman and all the trouble she gets into along the way. Now you may possibly be asking yourself, What is a guy doing writing in a woman’s voice? And that’s a good question. I can only say that I did not start out to write about Molly; she just came to me one day and asked that I tell her story. Perhaps I should start at the beginning. My first book was a 164,000-word historical novel. And in the publishing world, anything over 80,000 words for a first-time author is heresy. Or so I was told time and time again when I approached an agent for representation. After two years of research and writing, and a year of trying to secure the services of an agent, I got angry. To be told that my efforts were meaningless was somewhat demoralizing to say the least. I mean, those rejections were coming from people who had never even read my book. “So you want an 80,000-word novel?” I said to no one in particular, unless you count my dog, because he was the only one around at the time. Consequently, I decided to show them City Slickers that I could write an 80,000-word novel! I had just finished reading Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn for the third time, and I started thinking about what ever happened to those boys, Tom and Huck. They must have grown up, but then what? So I sat down at my computer and banged out REDEMPTION: The Further Adventures of Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer in two months; then sent out query letters to agents. Less than a month later, the chairman of one of the biggest agencies in New York City emailed me that he loved the story. We signed a contract and it was off to the races, or so I thought. But then the real fun began: the serious editing. Seven months later, I gave birth to Huck and Tom as adults. And just for the record, the final word count is 79,914. The book went on to reach #1 status on Amazon twice, and the rest, as they say, is history. But not quite. My agent then wanted me to write a sequel, but I had other plans. I was in the middle of editing down my first novel (that had been rejected by 1,876,324 agents . . . or so it seemed) from 164,000 words to the present 142,000. However, he was insistent, so I started to think about it. Now, one thing you have to understand is that I tied up all the loose ends at the end of REDEMPTION, so there was no way that I could write a sequel. And that is when Molly asked me to tell her story. Molly was a character that we met briefly in the first chapter of REDEMPTION, and then she is not heard from again. This is the description from MOLLY LEE: Molly is about to set off on the adventure of a lifetime . . . of two lifetimes. It’s 1861 and the Civil War has just started. Molly is an eighteen-year-old girl living on her family’s farm in Virginia when two deserters from the Southern Cause enter her life. One of them—a twenty-four-year-old Huck Finn—ends up saving her virtue, if not her life. Molly is so enamored with Huck, she wants to run away with him. But Huck has other plans and is gone the next morning before she awakens. Thus starts a sequence of events that leads Molly into adventure after adventure; most of them not so nice. We follow the travails of Molly Lee, starting when she is eighteen and ending when she is fifty-six. Even then Life has one more surprise in store for her. As I had wondered whatever became of Huck and Tom, I also wondered what Molly did when she found Huck gone. I know this has been a long-winded set up, but I felt I had to tell the backstory. Now I can move on and tell you about Molly. As stated earlier, Molly starts out as a naive young girl. Over time she develops into a strong, independent woman. The change is gradual. Her strengths come from the adversities she encounters along the road that is her life. With each setback, Molly follows that first rule she set against self-pity and simply moves on to make the best of whatever life throws her way. From working as a whore to owning a saloon, from going to prison to running a ranch, Molly plays to win with the cards she’s dealt. But she always keeps her humanity. She will kill to defend herself, and she has no problem killing to protect the weak and preyed upon. However, when a band of Indians (for instance) have been run off their land and have nowhere else to go, Molly allows them to live on her ranch, and in time they become extended family. This is from a review on Amazon: A young female in nineteenth-century rural America would have needed courage, fortitude, and firm resolve to thrive in the best of circumstances. Molly Lee possesses all of these, along with an iron will and an inherent ability to read people accurately and respond accordingly. I reckon that about sums up Molly. I would like to say that I wrote MOLLY LEE in one sitting and everything in it is my pure genius. But that would be a lie. I have three editors (two women and one guy). They kept me honest with regard to Molly. When I made her a little too hard, they would point out that she had to be softer or show more emotion in a particular scene. I set out to write a book where every chapter ended with a cliffhanger. I wanted the reader to be forced to turn to the next chapter. And I pretty much accomplished that, but I also wrote a few chapters where Molly and my readers could catch their collective breath. One last thing: Everything in MOLLY LEE is historically correct from the languages of the Indians to the descriptions of the way people dressed, spoke, and lived. I spend as much time on research as I do in writing my stories. Sometimes more. It looks as though I’ve used up my allotted word count (self-imposed), so I reckon I’ll ride off into the sunset and rustle up a little vodka and cranberry juice (with extra lime). Give our readers a brief description of your novel and its main theme.
The first book in the Autumn Series, Autumn in the City of Angels, follows 17-year-old Autumn Winters after an apocalyptic plague wipes out almost all of Earth’s population. Alone in what’s left of Los Angeles, Autumn must learn how to care for herself in this drastically altered world. Finding food and clean water, securing electricity and safety, and deciding who is trustworthy and who is dangerous becomes her day-to-day fight for survival. Among Autumn's newfound friends are siblings Ben and Rissi, motherly Connie, and mysterious Grey, a young man much wiser than his 18 years who harborsan unearthly secret. The main theme running through the entire series is the importance of family and loyalty to friends. Our main character has her mother, father, and best friend taken away from her, along with everyone else she knows, in chapter one. The people she meets afterward become her family, and she learns the importance of their presence in her life and throughout the rest of the series, fights for not only her own survival, but her new family’s survival as well. 2. Where did the inspiration for Autumn in the City of Angels come from? Jessica had a very frightening dream about an apocalyptic plague. The basic elements of this dream became the backbone of The Autumn Series: survivors hiding in subway tunnels from a dangerous group that had taken over control of what remained of LA, a single father and his young daughter befriending the main character, and a mysterious young doctor who seemed to know more about the plague than he was letting on. The story evolved as we worked with it – the main character went from an engaged girl in her mid-twenties to a privileged teenager, daughter of a famous actress. The single dad and his daughter changed into the brother/sister duo, Ben and Rissi. The whole story was made younger to appeal to the young adult age group, which was the age that we truly fell in love with reading and realized we both wanted to be writers. 3. Working as a team, who writes what and what area are you each best at? (Dialogue etc) Jessica: I tend to take the more romantic scenes and most of the ‘thinking’ scenes where Autumn is mulling something over or processing something. I find it kind of amazing how similar my writing voice is to Dana’s, however we’re always led toward different scenes when we’re splitting up an outline to write! Dana: I’m a bit less introspective in life, and it would seem also in writing. I like scenes with lots of characters and lots of talking. Witty banter, verbal sparring… whatever. I love making characters interact and seeing what happens! 4. How many books are planned in the series? Autumn in the City of Angels is the first book in a trilogy, followed by Autumn in the Dark Meadows. The third and final book in the series, Autumn in the City of Lights, should become available later this summer! 5. What benefits do you gain from working as a team? There’s always someone right there next to you, knowing exactly what you’re going through. No matter what we experience, whether it’s typing ‘THE END’ or hitting the ‘publish’ button on Amazon to release one of our books, or it’s reading a scathing review from a reader, we’re there for each other, feeling the same thing. It helps to not have to explain anything and just be joyful or supportive! 6. What future novels are you working on currently? After the third and final book in the Autumn Series is released later this summer, we’re going to get to work on our next young adult trilogy, The Wayfarer. It’s the story of a teenage girl that gets trapped in a bad foster situation and ends up running away. She accidentally finds a passage to another world, which she comes to realize is Limbo – the place between life and the after-life. She begins a quest to find and bring back the one person who can save her from her real life situation. 7. What advice would you give to novice writers? Write, write, write, WRITE!! And then write some more! If you want to be a writer, you have to WRITE! Focus on one project until you finish it! Reading is also key – in order to be a good writer, you have to have a toolbox. And you get some of these tools by reading! So read the good stuff. Read authors that are award winning, read the fun stuff, read the bad stuff – all so you can see why it’s award-winning, fun, or bad!  Release Date: September 15th 2015
