Ghosts in Film

Ghost films have been around for over a hundred years. As film goers, we love to scare ourselves silly watching them. While ghost films rarely come up with something new, here is a list of some of the top horror films of recent years and films that shook up the genre:

• The Shinning (1980) - this Kubrick masterpiece is one of the most famous Stephen King adaptions. A man moves his family to a hotel and is plagued by ghosts who aim to drive him mad.
• The Fog (1980) - John Carpenter's brilliant ghost story, features a ghostly pirate and his crew, stalking the residents of the small town of Antonio Bay. They move with the fog, killing their victims. The excellent score in this film really amped up the tension.
• The Sixth Sense (1999) - M. Night Shyamalan's famous ghost story - we all remember the famous line - I see dead people.
• Poltergeist (1982) - Carol Anne and her family are haunted by a vengeful preacher who kidnaps young Carol Anne and takes her into the spirit realm.
  
• The Blair Witch Project (1999) - The first shaky cam, found footage film, this film caused quite a stir in the early days of the internet, with the makers trying to convince the public that it was a true story.
• Paranormal Activity (2007) - This chilling story told the tale of a young couple who are terrorised in their home by an unseen entity. They set up a camera to catch the activity on tape. While there were many sequels to this film, the original remains the best.
  
• The Ring (2002) - A mysterious videotape kills those who watch it, unless they pass it on. A creepy tale. Who can forget the ghost in question when it crawls straight out of the TV?
