Editing Tips for Writers

The dreaded self-edit. You've just finished your latest book and typed the words The End, but unfortunately, your hard work is not done. It is now time to edit and polish your book before taking the next step. Here are a few tips for writers when it comes to editing their work. While some writers might edit as they go, others wait until they are finished writing to check it. Whatever style you adopt, these tips can help you catch those annoying typos.

• Before starting your edit, put the manuscripts aside for a while. The recommended time is at least a week, but that may depend on deadlines. Do try to leave some time in between as it will help you look at it with fresh eyes.
• Read your words out loud, or use the Read Aloud function on Word. Hearing the words can help identify typos and where you have used the wrong word. 
• It may help to print off a copy and read through it in that format using a red pen to highlight any issues.
• Some key things to look for are repetitiveness, missing words, and unnecessary filler words such as very. If in doubt, remove the word and if the sentence still makes sense then you do not need it.
• Don't try to tackle your edit in one sitting. You will grow tired and miss errors.
• Dialogue should be natural but to the point. Don't use unnecessary ums and uhs in your dialogue as they slow the writing down. It may be how people talk in real life, but it isn't needed in your book.

Editing can be tedious, but readers prefer correct grammar, spelling, and clear language in the books they read. Once you have completed your self-edit always have a professional editor/proofreader look over your work too. You want to put out the best book possible and avoid those poor reviews. Never rely solely on spellcheck as it can make mistakes or misunderstand dialogue. Nothing beats a human giving your manuscript the once over, but always do your research on editors before making an appointment and never pay the full amount up front.
