One of the biggest influences on the Paranormal Fantasy genre was the long running TV show The X Files. Running across 11 seasons and two movies, the series featured FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, who investigated strange cases known as the X Files. Across 25 years, they investigated alien abductions, poltergeists, monsters, supernatural abilities such as ESP and telekinesis, and cryptids.
The dynamic duo had opposing viewpoints. Mulder was a believer, open minded and willing to accept the paranormal as an explanation more readily than his partner. Scully was more level headed, a medical doctor, who believed there was a rational explanation for everything. This conflict really added to the show and pushed the agents to dig deeper to uncover the truth. If you are considering writing Paranormal Fantasy, The X Files could spark a few ideas. When it comes to characters, it can be a good idea to have at least one character more grounded in reality because it is the position the reader will likely take. It also creates conflict for the main character as they try to deal with whatever nasty is after them. If you haven't watched The X Files, I would encourage you to check it out.
